Grandma, Will You Play With Me? is about having a friend, or playmate to play with. But playing is secondary to being together. Brooke-Lynn spends time with her Grandma doing chores; playing computer games; playing with her dolls; or a fun board game like Candyland. This reminds me, when I was growing up, my Grandfather, Louis Moultrie drove us down south to spend the Summer with my Grandmother, Estell Takeall. We would stay with her the whole Summer while Grandpa Richmond went to work. She would stay home and tend to the children, cooking, and taking care of endless chores.

Grandma would rise early to feed the chickens, cats, dogs, rooster, cow, and hogs she had out back to the left of the corn field. Also, she loved pruning and digging in her vegetable garden. This farm girl would cook breakfast, lunch and dinner for everyone, and on Sunday she would bake a cake. She would laugh and swear under her breath, when we would complain about something she cooked on the plate for dinner. It was the chicken that was running around the yard, we were eating for dinner. She would say, "What do you want to eat?" "You don´t have to eat it."

We had a whole Summer to look out at the corn fi eld on the right, and the woods on the left. My brother Nathan had a B.B. gun to shot rabbits, or birds, and occasionally us. My sister, Vera use to hang out at our cousins´ Juke Joint up the road, dancing and listening to music. I used to follow Grandma around talking nonstop to her. I think she was listening. I sure loved to talk. We would run through the corn field and play hide-and-seek. There was an occasional visitor, my aunts and their children stopping by on Sunday, or a church member. She had little, or no time for herself. She would fetch the water from the pump outside, and boil pots of water for a wash off before bedtime. She did this everyday, getting up early about 5:30am and going to bed about 5:30pm. Boy, we were blessed to have Grandma.
